The British shilling is an historic British coin from the eras of the Kingdom of Great Britain and the later United Kingdom; also adopted as a Scot denomination upon the 1707 Treaty of Union. The word shilling comes from an accounting term that dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, deemed to be the value of a cow in Kent or a sheep elsewhere. There counted twelve pence to the shilling, with twenty shillings to the pound. The British shilling had succeeded the English shilling, and it remained in circulation until Decimal Day 1971. Upon decimalisation the British shilling was superseded by the five-pence piece having a comparable value, size and weight. The pre-decimal shilling was withdrawn from circulation in 1990, when the five pence piece was reduced in size.

This statement "Honi soit qui mal y pense" supposedly originated when King Edward III was dancing with his first cousin and daughter-in-law, Joan of Kent. Her garter slipped down to her ankle, causing those around her to snicker at her humiliation. In an act of chivalry Edward placed the garter around his own leg, saying "Honi soit qui mal y pense", and the phrase later became the motto of the Order.

The sixpence, known colloquially as the tanner, or half-shilling, was a British pre-decimal coin, worth six (pre - 1971) pence, or 1/40th of a pound sterling.

Maharaja Mangal Singh Prabhankar was the 6th Maharaja of Alwar (1874/1892) born 1859, adopted from Thikana Thana, installed upon the gaddi on 14th December 1874, in preference to Kunwar Lakhdir Singh of Bijwar, Maharaja [cr.1889], G.C.S.I., married (amongst others), (a) 1877, the second daughter of Maharaja Prithvi Singhji of Kishangarh, married (b), 1878, a daughter of Raja Bhairon Singhji of Ratlam, and had issue. He died 23rd May 1892 in Nainital due to alcoholic poisoning.

Reverse: Cameo of Cecil Rhodes flanked by springs and ribbons and three shields.

The edge has the words "1853 OUT OF VISION CAME REALITY 1953" inscribed. 124,000 were produced, as well as an additional 1,500 in proof.
The coin is 38.5mm in diameter, weighs 28.28 grams and is 50% silver, giving it an ASW (Actual Silver Weight) of 0.4546 troy ounces.
