In Chile, a nominal bimetallism, which before 1873 over valued gold. As a result this led to a suspension of specie payments in 1878. In the 1890’s it attempted to adopt the gold standard. The subsidiary coinage was reduced in 1879 from the 15.5 to 1 ratio to 0.500 fineness to make the coinage safe from the melting pot. The year 1880 un decimo was struck in both standards; a mintage of 242,723 in .900 fine and a larger mintage of 704,848 marked 0.5 for .500 fineness.
